Week 13 - Future of Internet

Just like how i left you'll to ponder in my previous post, this post will keep all of us in suspense and will make us ponder too. On what you may ask! THE FUTURE OF THE INTERNET! i have no idea what my future holds for me. What more if its the future of the internet.
Before i begin, let me show you'll an interesting video.

This video was so funny, Doesnt it make you wonder on what the future of the internet is going to evolve to. I certainly am eager to find out.
take a look at this video.

i think in the future, everywhere we go, it will be touch screen. Also, we just need to think about what we want and visualise it and we will get it.

Let's leave Dr. Vinton G. Cerf, "The Father Of The Internet" and VP, Chief Internet Evangelist for Google to answer what the future of the internet is.

so guys, what will the future of internet be?Will we all just become connected through the web? Be it work school shopping eating clubbing, everything will be done through the internet!

Week 12 - Free topic.

This week is free posting.
Hence i decided to talk about the internet in general.

Before that please watch this video on world wide web

i think the internet is really a phenemenon! It does wonders!
You can get almost any information on the net.
You just need to google it and you've gotten your answer. Its almost as though nothing is impossible on the internet. We all know that internet is ever ready to provide users with a whole load of information.

However, i would like to talk more on the evolution of social networking sites and how amazing it is.

To be honest, social networking sites are really as easy as it sounds in the video.
You just need to sign up and within seconds you'll be connected to whoever you would like to be connected to.
Through social networking sites, you can meet up with your long lost friends and relatives. It is amazing to see how sometimes even if you happen to see all these people on the streets we wont bother to say hi but we bother to say hi to them on facebook.

I have always wondered why this was so?
I guess it could be the absence of face to face communication. Hence, people are more comfortable in approaching and having conversations with these people in the offline world instead of in reality.
Now that social networking sites have become such an important part in our lives, have you imagined life without it?

Imagine one day you come back home, and you type www.facebook.com and then you realise the website is no longer available. What will you do?
And then from that day on, everytime you on your laptop to use internet, none of these social networking sites exist. Where do i we head on from there or how comfortable will we be without these social networking sites?

Time to ponder!

Week 11 - Journalism and the Internet

I found a very interesting video for this week's entry on Journalism and the Internet.
This is a video from CNN talking about the decline in newspaper industry in America.

It was mentioned in the video that newspaper companies in different states in the US are slowly folding up due to the decrease in demand for it. Indeed it is rather interesting to see how the internet has caused so much competitiveness in the journalism industry. As they asked in the video, can citizen journalism replace newspaper journalism?

It was a good point to note in the video that they mentioned that it is not that people are not reading the information that newspaper journalism provides. People are reading it. The problem is that they are reading it online. Hence, newspaper companies need to find a way to make profit out of this. The availability of news on the internet and the widespread of citizen journalism is the reason that is causing newspaper industries to lose money and hence having to fold up their business.

I guess the widespread use of the internet is increasing at such rapid rates without us realising it. Over time, almost every piece of news is going to be on the internet instead of the newspapers. I believe that if the newspaper industries find a way to earn some profit from citizen journalism then it can be a two way thing.
However, in my opinion, i feel that no matter how much citizen journalism may thrive, i would still continue to read the papers as i find more value in it. It is no doubt that citizen journalism has got its own share of value too, but there will always be that lingering feeling of credibility when it comes to sources/news on the internet as compared the traditional newspapers.

I would like to end my entry this week with a very interesting video i found online about citizen journalism vs traditional journalism.

Week 10 - Politics and the Internet

This topic is rather interesting as this was my group project's topic. What my group did for project was to focus on Singapore's General Elections 2011. we made a comparison as to how the previous campaign in 2006 was as compared to the campaigns now in 2011. There was indeed a vast difference.

Before i begin, please do watch the video below.

This video is the inaugural episode of the Singapore Democrats' talkshow, Let's Talk, which features Alex Au, one of the most prominent bloggers in Singapore and author of the Yawningbread.org. Let's Talk is another groundbreaking initiative by the Singapore Democratic Party. It is the FIRST talkshow series on the Internet in Singapore. You definitely would not have been able to see such a thing back in 2006.

Back in 2006, the government placed many restrictions on the usage of the internet and new media for campaign purposes. However we see a big jump in 2011.

Now every active political party are making use of the internet and new media for campaigning. Besides just having a website for their party, they each have a facebook and twitter account.
Below are few links out of the many,

link for Singapore democratic party's facebook acct: http://www.facebook.com/yoursdp

link for People's Action Party facebook account: http://www.facebook.com/pap.sg

In these websites, critical issues are raised and the public are allowed to comment on the issue on the website itself. This is rather good as it allows interaction between the party and the public.

If you have twitter you can actually search for these accounts such as the PAP, SDP, and even individual ministers like Teo Chee Hean.

I believe that by using new social media such as facebook and twitter for campaigning, it is very effective as it can reach out to a wide range of audience.
Firstly, we all know that youths these days are active users of such social networking sites and youths 21 and above are allowed to vote. Hence, this mode of campaigning will definitely be effective as it allows youths to get information while surfing online at their own convenience.

Besides websites and social networking sites, there are also blogs and online citizen forums.
For example the head of the reform party, Mr Kenneth Jeyaretnam has a blog where he voices critical issues and blogs very often about the coming GE 2011.
Also, as you google, you can find online citizen forums where citizens are allowed to voice their opinions and express their concerns with regards to the coming GE 2011.
There are also videos posted online with regards to the different parties.

Overall, i feel that the Singapore government has given more freedom to both the political parties and the public with regards to using the Internet for politics. This is a good move as it fosters better interaction between the public and the parties and it bridges the gap, allowing citizens to have a say and to feel a sense of belonging to the coming GE 2011.

Week 9 - Podcasting

During lecture this week, we saw many interesting videos on the ipod, itunes and podcasting. Hence, i went to read up more on what exactly podcasting is.

So what is podcasting?

Podcasting is an online audio content that is delivered via an RSS feed. With Podcasting, listeners can determine the time and the place, meaning they decide what programming they want to receive and when they want to listen to it.

Listeners can retain audio archives to listen to at their leisure. While blogs have turned many bloggers into journalists, podcasting has the potential to turn podcasters into radio personalities.

Podcasting is the syndication of audio files using RSS. Podcasting works the same as a standard RSS feed reader or news aggregator, the only difference is that the feed you subscribe to contains an audio file in it. Instead of reading content in your RSS feed reader or aggregator, you can listen to the contents of your feed using a reader or aggregator that supports podcasting, or you can listen to them on an iPod or similar device. While podcasting was named for the iPod, you do not have to have an iPod to listen to a podcast. Podcasts can be displayed on websites with clickable links to audio files and many of the standard RSS readers, like FeedDemon's latest beta, have begun supporting audio enclosures.

Week 8 - Firewalls

Our reality today has become almost fully virtual.
Everyone is somehow and in some way connected through the internet.
Sometimes we do not realise that whatever we post on the internet can actually be seen by almost anyone. Hence, in the recent years security on the internet has become an important aspect. Security for your computer/laptop and security for yourself and your identity on the internet. And this was what was covered in lecture this week.
I will be covering one aspect of the security component of the net in this entry and it would be on firewall.

So what is a firewall?

A Firewall is a computer program that monitors the flow of information from the Internet to your computer. There are two different types of firewall available for you to use - Hardware Firewalls and Software Firewalls.

A Hardware Firewall is a physical piece of equipment that sits between the Internet and your computer. An example of a hardware firewall is a broadband router, a common form of Internet connection. The benefit of using a hardware firewall, is that it has the ability to protect multiple computer systems that are connected to it at the same time. This makes it an effective firewall for use in businesses that have multiple computers connected to the Internet, as well as in homes that have more than one computer system.

Software Firewalls work in the same way as a hardware firewall, by monitoring and blocking information that comes to your computer via the Internet, however software firewalls must be installed as a program on your computer. These software firewalls can either be installed from a computer disk that you have purchased, or downloaded over the Internet. Software firewalls are the most common type of firewall. Programs such as Norton 360, Norton Internet Security, ESET Smart Security, and Kaspersky Internet Security all have a firewall bundled within them.

Time to make a movie.

Hi Guys.
A very close cousin of mine recently got married in May last year.
And i did a movie for their wedding reception last year.
And after last week's lesson when Mr Abel Choy said that we could use a old video but add newer stuffs to it, i went back to the movie i made for the wedding reception. I made some changes to the original video by adding more effects and i tried out this new thing whereby i tried including videos into the storyboard instead of just photos.
And it managed to work just fine.
After doing this video for this blog, i went back to show my cousin the latest version of the video and he loved it even more!=)
Windows Movie Maker can really do wonders.
By sharing this video with you, it can give you insights as to how an Indian wedding is.Enjoy.=)

Week 7 - Internet tools

Google has become almost everyone's main search engine tool. I believe it is not mainly because its a search engine tool but probably because Google has many other tools to it such as Google Earth and etc.

There's this Google Language tool whereby you can translate English words to any other language of your choice. Google provides a translation link and language tools to enable you to read pages written in unfamiliar languages. With the spread of globalization, more and more web pages are available in other languages besides English. As such, this Google Language Tool is certainly a great internet tool for internet consumers today.

Google translates pages by computer. Machine translation is difficult to do well and tends not to be as clear as human translation. But it can give you the gist of what’s written or suggestions for translating something into another language.

Your results may include a “Translate this page” link when a results page is written in a language different from your interface language (as specified by your Google Preferences, which we describe soon). Your interface language is the language in which Google displays messages and labels, buttons, and tips on Google’s home page and results page. You can translate pages written in English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish into another language from that set.

And it is very easy to use. All you need to do is click on the “Language Tools” link to the right of the search box on Google’s home page,or visit www.google.com/language_tools, or select the Language Tools menu option in the Google Toolbar to: -Search for pages written in specific languages
-Search for pages located in specific countries
-Use the Google interface in another language (that is, set Google’s home page, messages and labels, and buttons to display in a specific language)
-Visit Google’s site in a specific country.
-For example, visit www.google.de in Germany
-Translate any text or web page from a limited set of languages including English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, or Spanish into another language in that set.

I've provided a link below to Google's Language Tools. Take a look. It is simple and easy to use.

http://www.google.com/language_tools

have fun translating!

Week 6 - E-learning

As amazing as E-business there is also another amazing phenomenon on the called "E-learning".

E-learning is something which employs electronic media as part of delivery system and
encompasses diverse learning strategies and technologies including computer based
learning, web based learning, virtual classrooms, and digital collaborations is fast
becoming popular all over the world because of its distinctive features. Its cost
effectiveness, flexibility of learning anytime anywhere, uniform delivery to all users reducing chances of misinterpretations, promotion of team learning and collaboration,
and easier access to global community, has given it a competitive edge over the
traditional method of learning.

E-learning has become very popular in the recent years in Singapore. All the way from Primary Schools to Junior Colleges, there is usually a day in the year that the schools will put aside for E-learning. What happens on this day is that students need not come to school for normal lessons. Hence, teachers would post an assignment or a lesson online on websites such as "Litespeed" which is solely based for e-learning purposes. So once assignments and lessons are posted up, students will need to log in and complete the assignments or view the lessons which would usually be a video-based lesson.

Singapore places a great emphasis on E-learning day as all schools ensure that each and every of their student can gain access to the e-learning portal. Hence, for students who have no computers or internet connection at home, schools will allow the students to come back to school on that day to use the computers in the computer labs in schools so that they can complete the assignments or lessons posted online.

Indeed, E-learning has a lot of benefits to it. It is fast and hassle-free. And the best part is students love it because they do not need to attend school on such E-learning days. E-learning definitely enhances the traditional classroom lessons and it makes learning a lot more fun. I believe that in the near future, E-learning could possibly replace our traditional classrooms and who knows?

One day, our government might just allow us to not attend school anymore and to allow us to participate in E-learning instead.

Week 5 - E-business

Don't you think the internet has advanced so greatly that we can now even do business on the internet! This wonderful phenomenon is known as E-business.

Ebusiness is a term used to describe businesses that run on the Internet,or utilizing Internet technologies to improve the productivity or profitability of a business. In most contexts ebusiness refers exclusively to Internet businesses.
There are many advantages as to running a business using the internet.By selling products and services online, an ebusiness is able to reach a much wider consumer base than any traditional brick-and-mortar store could ever hope for. This function of ebusiness is referred to as ecommerce, and the terms are occasionally used interchangeably.

There is also another term which is closely related to business on the internet. And that term is known as "eprocurement". An ebusiness may also use the Internet to acquire wholesale products or supplies for in-house production. This facet of ebusiness is sometimes referred to as eprocurement, and may offer businesses the opportunity to cut their costs dramatically. Even many ebusinesses which operate without an electronic storefront now use eprocurement as a way to better track and manage their purchasing.

I feel that e-business is a lot more faster and efficient and it reaches a wider range of consumers. All information that you need and want to know about the product is available to you in seconds. For example, on Facebook itself we can find many people running their business there selling things like clothings and accessories. So what happens here is that usually when you are interested in a particular product which you see on their Facebook page, you just need to comment on it and the person would send you a personal message giving you the details and the price. All you need to do is confirm the order, transfer the money and the product gets delivered to you within a few days.

How fast is that? It makes shopping a lot more easier because you can do it while you're on the net surfing, or doing some research paper that is due in time to come. In fact, i have quite a lot of friends who have opened businesses on the internet selling clothings, accessories and nail polish. And when i ask them, many have had positive comments about their E-business. They do mention that they make quite a great amount of profit as their business is exposed to a wider range of consumers and this makes their business a lot more profitable and efficient.

So what are you waiting for?

Go think of a business to do and get it running on the net!

You can be richer than you currently are within seconds!

Week 3-online identity and privacy

As we all know, teenagers and young adults have flocked to the so-called "social networking sites" such as Facebook, Twitter and MySpace. So much to the extent that kids who don't have a profile are becoming the exception to the rule.

Cheaper, more accessible technologies have not only broken down barriers to multimedia production, but also psychological barriers to self-expression on the Internet. These social networking sites give children the opportunity to share stories, pictures, videos, and other files with friends and acquaintances.

For kids of this generation, who have used Internet-based technologies for many social purposes, posting a profile of one's self and sending messages and files to friends is a natural progression.

As such, parents have started to worry about their kids identity and privacy online. However, parents need to fret not as there are privacy settings on most networking sites whereby you can restrict and control who can or cannot see your profile. And most kids are definitely aware of this tool.

When the hype of this social networking sites just sparked off, parents worry was their child's identity and privacy online. However, that has been countered with the privacy setting tools present in these social networking sites. Now what parents are worrying about is their kids restricting their own parents from viewing their profiles.

There have been many studies done to show the effects of social networking sites on parent-child relationships and many parents have complained that what they see on their kids profiles are not exactly it because they limit the things that their parents can see.

In my opinion, i think parents should give their kids their own space with regards to all these social networking sites. It is without a doubt that parents should be on a constant lookout for their kids to ensure that they do go onto the right path. And honestly, i believe that kids will not limit their profiles and restrict their parents from viewing it so as long as they have open and approachable parents. All kids would desire to be able to talk to their parents just like talk to their friends. Hence, i believe that with this new age of social networking sites, parents should also start to learn and fully equip themselves with the necessary skills of these sites and start spending more time and talking to their kids and ensuring that they educate their kids about the pros and cons of these sites. This will enable their kids to use these sites responsibly. And at the same, it can help improve the parent-child relationship. Result from a study stated that kids do not mind having their parents on their facebook so as long as they do not invade their space. I believe that if parents approach these kind of topics tactfully and make their kids understand and have an open relationship with them, we could possibly see more and more kids adding their parents as their friends on Facebook.

Week 2 - Social Networking Sites

This week we learnt about social networking sites. I believe that many have a lot to say about social networking sites(SNS)these days.I would say that SNS has become a part of our everyday lives. There are many SNS in society today. Facebook, twitter, myspace, tagged and friendster are probably among the most well-known ones.Without fail, almost everyday individuals like myself and my friends log on to facebook at least once a day to update our posts, or post new photos or to comment or like someone else's photo or post. In fact, we see random and often tweets from friends on twitter almost every hour. Basically, i would say that SNS has invaded our lives.

There are definitely pros and cons with regards to SNS. But by the looks of it i'm afraid that in the near future the cons may outweigh the pros. The good thing about SNS like facebook, twitter, my space and etc is that it is very convenient. In fact, with the increased standard of living in today's society it makes these SNS a lot more accessible as majority have access to in the internet within their convenience. Hence, people see no loss in being so involved in these SNS as there's no cost to being on these sites. Plus, it allows them to meet up with old friends and to stay in contact with old and current ones. Sometimes, people are just too busy in today's world that they make such sites like "Facebook" their "meeting place".

However what i fear is that in the near future such sites may become a substitute for face to face communication. Now itself we almost cant do without these sites and are turning to it to maintain relationships and friendships. And because it is so convenient some may just use these sites as a substitute to meeting up with people in real life. Like nowadays, we hear people saying, "hey i'll catch you on fb later". Almost like as if these sites have become the meeting place.

Can you imagine when it comes to a time where all relationships are maintained through these SNS? How scary is that?

However i believe that if used responsibly and adequately we will be able to reap the benefits of these SNS way more than its cons. What we must not fail to remember is that face to face communication is still highly valued in society and it is still very important in maintaining close relationships. In fact, it also helps in reducing the chances of miscommunication as we are able to see the other party.

Currently, i only have an account with facebook. And i've found many benefits in using it. I was able to find my primary school friends and childhood friends and find out where they are now and what they've been up to. It is indeed very nice to meet up with old friends and to find out how they've been after so many years.

Well i hope that in the near future these SNS do not replace face to face communication and i hope that people continue to use it responsibly so that it can enhance their communication and relationships instead of replacing it totally.

Week 1-introduction to the internet

This week we learnt about introduction to the internet. Basically, all these while i was just blindly making use of the advantages of the internet. Little did i know that the internet has actually evolved drastically over time. It came to my realization that people today are all connected to each other and just within seconds away from each other. It was more of the teleconferencing and email that made me realize how much closely connected we are.

Back then, people had to go through the trouble of writing letters and posting it and waiting for few days before the letter reaches over to the recipient. But today, all they need to do is just type and email and send it and within seconds the recipient is able to receive it. This has definitely enhanced communication in the world today as it had made it a lot faster, convenient and accessible.

Even teleconferencing has made many people's lives a lot easier. Nowadays, people make use of teleconferencing for work purposes and personal purposes as well. The advantages are that even amidst the physical distance and boundaries across countries people can stay connected easily and can teleconference for work related issues. This saves travelling time and travelling cost and besides it can be done at your own convenience.

Another thing that intrigued me was how there is the presence of IP ADDRESSES. One of the video that was shown in class made me realize that the internet is not very much safe after all. We think that whatever we do or post on the net cannot be seen by others but we fail to realize that once we post something on the net, it can be retrieved one way or another. Another scary thing is when we use the computers provided at work. We fail to realize that our bosses can actually hack into our computer system to see what we are doing on the net. Indeed it isnt as confidential as we all think it is.

Hence, i am rather interested and looking forward to this module to continue to learn how the evolution of internet has affected communication today, be it positively or negatively.
